Accessibility Solutions

Lifts specified to EN 81-70 so that reach, signalling and manoeuvring space work for every passenger.

An accessible lift is not a variant with an extra button. It is a set of decisions about cabin dimensions, reach, signalling and timing that have to be made before the shaft is poured. Bronze Lift specifies lifts to EN 81-70, the European standard for accessibility to lifts for persons including persons with disability.

What EN 81-70 actually governs

The standard sets out cabin sizes against defined wheelchair categories, the clear door width that follows from them, the height band in which controls must sit, and the audible and visual signals a passenger needs in order to use the lift unaided. It also addresses door dwell time, so that boarding is not rushed. These requirements interact: a cabin that satisfies the dimension clause can still fail on control height.

What we specify

  • Cabin dimensions and clear door width matched to the wheelchair category the building has to serve.
  • Control height and layout, with raised and braille marking on car and landing buttons.
  • Audible and visual signals: floor announcements, arrival indication and direction of travel.
  • Door dwell time and reopening behaviour, set so that boarding is comfortable rather than tight.
  • Handrails and mirror placement that assist manoeuvring inside the cabin.

Where this matters most

Public buildings, hospitals, transport interchanges and any project with a regulatory accessibility obligation. Tell us the building type and the categories you have to serve, and we will state which cabin sizes satisfy them and what that means for the shaft.
